Balloons Over Africa

Balloons Over Africa is a family run business that is passionate about ballooning in South Africa. The business has been providing Hot Air Balloon flights in the Sabie River Valley since 1998 and their pilot, Kevin, has over 20 years experience in flying and held the South African National Champion ranking for 6 consecutive years.

Balloons Over Africa are a licensed non-scheduled air service and are fully compliant with the requirements of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). These requirements include carrying full insurance and making use of approved and certified balloons that are serviced and maintained by approved and licensed organisations.

Their flights take place over the scenic Sabie River Valley near Hazyview in Mpumalanga. Hazyview is located approximately mid way between the southern Kruger Park and the breathtaking escarpments of the Northern Drakensberg mountain range. Balloon flights usually take place at sunrise as the air is cool and stable before the ground heats up. Once the sun rises, it heats the earth up which can cause the balloon to be come increasingly unstable and dangerous.
The flights are highly dependent on ideal weather conditions. Should the weather be windy or rainy, the pilot will postpone or cancel the flight for safety reasons, but flying conditions are usually good for this area and cancellations rare.

Balloons Over Africa can carry a maximum of 8 passengers on each flight, with the capacity dependent on the passengersí weights and ambient temperatures. The small group size allows them to offer personal attention and provide a unique experience for each passenger.
Passengers are advised to bring a camera or video camera for the flight to capture the experience and to bring warm clothes to accommodate the colder air at higher altitudes.

The flight departs from the Sabie River Adventures front lawn where passengers enjoy tea or coffee and can experience the preparations for a flight. The flight allows passengers to experience the spectacular views of the surrounding area as it floats over small hills and hidden valleys and usually lasts about one hour. After landing, passengers join their pilot for breakfast at a country lodge where they receive a flight certificate.

A balloon flight can be anywhere from treetop level to several thousand feet high, however, they prefer to generally fly at a low level to allow passengers to enjoy the scenery and to spot small antelope species and rabbits, if the prevailing wind conditions allow.
